Leoville Las Cases 1997

Chateau Leoville Las Cases

22 jahre

A star of the vintage, this classy, cedary, black currant, and sweet cherry-scented, dense ruby-colored Las Cases exhibits a beautiful dosage of new oak, medium body, expansive, ripe, concentrated flavors, plenty of glycerin, and exceptional purity. It is low in acidity, and already delicious. Anticipated maturity: now-2016. *** The 1997 Leoville Las Cases is unquestionably one of the stars of the vintage. The color is a saturated ruby purple, and the wine offers up plenty of blackberry and cherry fruit intermixed with smoke, cedar, and herbs. It possesses outstanding richness, low acidity, and a sweetly tannic, nicely-textured, surprisingly long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2014. *** This great estate continues to turn out wines of first-growth quality, and increasingly, at first-growth price levels. The harvest took place between September 18 and October 4, with only 40% of the production going into the grand vin. The final blend consisted of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.5% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, and 3.5% Petit Verdot. It is one of the more concentrated and complete, as well as best defined 1997s I tasted. It exhibits an opaque purple color, and the classic Las Cases aromatic profile (sweet black fruits, cherries, kirsch, vanillin, lead pencil, and minerals). Medium to full-bodied, with silky tannin, low acidity, and layers of concentration, the wine reveals considerable intensity in both the mid-palate and finish. In contrast to the nearly perfect, prodigiously rich, massive yet phenomenally well-balanced 1996, the 1997 has less weight and flavor dimension. Nevertheless, it is a compelling St.-Julien that should drink well between 2000-2020. This should turn out to be one of the most concentrated and longest-lived wines of the vintage.

Chateau Leoville Las Cases

Chateau Leoville Las Cases is a famed wine producer from the Saint Julien appellation based in Bordeaux, France. The primary red fine wine produced by this estate is classified as a Second Growth, according to the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

Chateau Leoville Las Cases was once a subdivision of a much larger plot, along with Leoville Barton and Leoville Poyferre, until 1840 when the estate was once again divided to give Chateau Leoville Las Cases true independence.

The vineyards of Leoville las Cases span just under 100 hectares, with a grape selection of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The estate was one of the first to introduce a second wine, labeled Clos du Marquis, however that is officially a separate wine. The actual second label is in production since 2007, referred to as Le Petit Lion de Marquis de Las Cases.
