Cos d'Estournel 1990

Chateau Cos d'Estournel

29 jahre

Not as concentrated as the 1982, or as most of the vintages made since 2001, the 1990 Cos has reached full maturity. It exhibits sweet berry fruit intermixed with spice box, herbs, and spring flowers. Expansive, round, and sensual, with wonderful purity as well as lushness, this irresistible wine can be enjoyed over the next 6-10 years. Release price: ($350.00/case) *** In contrast to the 1989, the 1990 is a spectacular wine, and, along with the 1986, 1982, and 1953, one of the four finest Cos d'Estournels made in the post-World War II era. Bruno Prats believes it is the finest wine he has ever made. In the most recent tasting, the 1990 was even better than in the past, charming me as well as other tasters with its flashy display of opulent Merlot (about 40% of the blend) mixed with ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. It was one of the more forward 1990s in the tasting, which no doubt accounted for its precocious showing. This super-concentrated wine possesses a roasted herb, sweet, jammy black fruit-scented nose, with noteworthy opulence and succulence. Pure and full-bodied, this concentrated wine conceals more tannin than it is presently revealing. The wine is open, flattering, and impossible to resist. It will continue to mature for 15-20 years.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel

Chateau Cos d’Estournel is a prestigious winery based in the Saint Estephe appellation in Bordeaux, France. As deemed by the Official Bordeaux Classification of 1855, the chateau’s premier red wine (with the same name) holds the rank of Second Growth. The fine wine estate is a neighbor of Chateau Lafite Rothschild in the adjacent commune of Pauillac.

Chateau Cos d’Estournel, along with the first wine, also produces a second wine labeled Les Pagodes de Cos, and a further wine known as Chateau Marbuzet. The name “Cos” signifies a “hill of pebbles” in Gascon dialect. The chateau’s full name was given by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel in 1810.

The entire estate of Cos d’Estournel covers around 100 hectares, with the vinyards spanning around 70 hectares split into subdivisions. The grape composition of this top chateau contains around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with a petit selection of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In total, Chateau Cos d’Estournel produces around 32,000 cases of fine wine on a yearly basis.
